On sparkling form under the baton of guest conductor Andris Nelsons, the Munich Philharmonic open with a joyful reading of Ravel’s kaleidoscopic orchestration of Debussy’s early piano work Danse, based on the tarantella rhythm. In the “Pastoral” Symphony, Nelsons and his musicians give vibrant expression to Beethoven’s rural portraits, from the sounds of flowing water and birdsong to the building violence of a storm. There’s more birdsong in the intimate, poetic Siegfried Idyll, written as a birthday present for Wagner’s wife Cosima. With its every nuance captured to perfection, this work brings the concert to an uplifting end.
Filmed live at the Gasteig in Munich on 31 October 2020, the concert was attended by a reduced audience because of the ongoing restrictions imposed by the pandemic.
