Daniel Barenboim, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Yo-Yo Ma perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto

This special performance of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto was filmed at the Berlin Philharmonie in 2019 as part of a concert celebrating the 20th birthday of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, co-founded by Daniel Barenboim. The soloists are three of today’s most illustrious musicians: Barenboim himself, who conducts from the piano, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In this unusual, endlessly inventive and beautifully crafted work, each of the three solo parts is clearly differentiated and carefully balanced with the orchestral writing. Barenboim, Mutter and Ma bring all their brilliant musicianship to bear here, creating a wealth of instrumental colour throughout, from the monumental opening Allegro to the lyrical central Largo and the lively, dance-like Rondo alla Polacca finale, which Barenboim has called “the best polonaise Beethoven ever wrote”. This film is being shown in anticipation of Daniel Barenboim’s 80th birthday next November.
