Emily D’Angelo & Sophia Muñoz in recital

Emily D’Angelo, who signed to DG earlier this year, presents a varied programme giving prominence to composers past and present. Together with pianist Sophia Muñoz, D’Angelo opens this recital from Berlin with Night, one of many songs written by the hugely talented but long-overlooked composer Florence Price. As well as works by the equally pioneering Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and Clara Schumann, the pair also perform a selection of late Romantic Lieder by Alexander Zemlinsky and Arnold Schoenberg, two early songs by Rebecca Clarke – The Seal Man, in declamatory style, and The Cloths of Heaven, setting a poem by W.B. Yeats – and two of Aaron Copland’s Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson. From the 21st century we hear Cecilia Livingston’s Penelope, inspired by the figure of Odysseus’s ever-faithful wife, and an excerpt from Missy Mazzoli’s multimedia chamber opera Song from the Uproar which is also featured on Emily D’Angelo’s debut DG album, enargeia.
