Emily D’Angelo & Sophia Muñoz in recital

Emily D’Angelo, who signed to DG earlier this year, presents a varied programme giving prominence to composers past and present. Accompanied by Sophia Muñoz, D’Angelo opens this recital from Berlin with Night, one of many songs written by the hugely talented but long-overlooked African-American composer Florence Price. As well as works by the equally pioneering Fanny Hensel and Clara Schumann, the pair also perform a selection of late Romantic Lieder by Zemlinsky and Schoenberg, two early songs by Rebecca Clarke – The Seal Man, in declamatory style, and The Cloths of Heaven, setting a poem by Yeats – and two of Copland’s Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson. From the 21st century we hear Cecilia Livingston’s Penelope, inspired by the figure of Odysseus’ ever-faithful wife, and an excerpt from Missy Mazzoli’s opera Song from the Uproar which also features on Emily D’Angelo’s debut DG album, enargeia.
