Krystian Zimerman plays Chopin (1987)

Krystian Zimerman made his breakthrough at the age of 18, when he won first prize at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1975. The early years of his career were mostly associated with the Polish composer and the familiarity and mastery with which he performs Chopin’s music is evident in this recording from Vienna in 1987. Zimerman’s interpretations shape and manipulate the sound with absolute tonal control and beauty and reveal infinite expressive subtleties. As one of the most highly skilled technicians, having intensively studied piano building, he has fully honed his instrument, allowing him to perform with great intricacy and intimacy. His knowledge and understanding of both the instrument and the composer make this recital a stellar navigation of the technical finesse, musical shape and tonal organisation of the all-Chopin programme.
