Rudolf Buchbinder at Pianomania, Lisbon – The Diabelli Project

As part of the Beethoven 2020 celebrations, Rudolf Buchbinder created a project inspired by one of the composer’s greatest masterpieces. In 1819, Austrian publisher Anton Diabelli invited some of the best-known composers of the day to produce a variation on a theme he himself had written, a challenge that ultimately led Beethoven to present him with a set of no fewer than 33 variations for solo piano. Two hundred years later, Buchbinder asked eleven contemporary composers to create their own responses to the same 32-bar theme. In this recital from the Pianomania festival at Lisbon’s Gulbenkian Foundation, he presents three of his new commissions – those by Toshio Hosokawa, Tan Dun, and Jörg Widmann – and contrasts them with three of the shorter responses to Diabelli’s original challenge, as created by Liszt, Schubert, and Czerny. Having opened the programme with the waltz theme itself, he ends with a complete performance of Beethoven’s monumental Diabelli Variations, a work the legendary pianist has described as “a huge mountain to be conquered”.
