PREMIERE: The Monteverdi ensembles & John Eliot Gardiner – Berlioz: L’enfance du Christ

In a brand new production, marking the first performance at their new London home, the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, led by their founder and conductor, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, perform one of Hector Berlioz’s most substantial works. L’enfance du Christ is a three-part oratorio that traces the story of King Herod and the flight of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus into Egypt. Best known for the Shepherds’ Farewell, the work is one of supreme beauty and a favourite among other Romantic composers. These include Massenet and Brahms, who wrote a letter to Clara Schumann saying: ‘This work has always enchanted me. I really like it the best of all Berlioz’s works.’ Together with the Trinity Boys Choir and a fine selection of international soloists, the concert takes place at the iconic St Martin-in-the-Fields, kicking off the festive season with warmth, serenity, and old-fashioned charm.

“This concert opens a fresh chapter in the story of the Monteverdi Choir & Orchestras. I fell in love with L’enfance du Christ when I was very young and have performed the complete oratorio many times since. It’s a truly remarkable composition, beautiful and tender yet also intense in the way it tells the narrative of the Holy Family’s persecution by Herod and escape to safety in Egypt.” – John Eliot Gardiner
