Benjamin Bernheim & Mathieu Pordoy at the Salzburg Festival

Salzburg’s exquisite Haus für Mozart (“House for Mozart”) plays host to an evening of song from Benjamin Bernheim. The French tenor and DG artist, whose recital at last year’s Salzburg Festival received rave reviews, is joined by his countryman Mathieu Pordoy in a programme devoted to love and the deep-seated emotions it stirs. They launch their performance with Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer (“Poem of Love and the Sea”), settings of youthful poems that flow with lyrical grace and Wagnerian splendour. Four songs by Clara Schumann and four more by her friend and protégé Brahms probe the passion and intensity of romantic love, touching the sublime in Brahms’s late Op.105 songs. Two settings of folk melodies from the British Isles by Benjamin Britten and a thrilling showpiece by his teacher Frank Bridge provide a compelling conclusion to Bernheim’s banquet of songs about love.
